About Carterham

Caterham is a bustling commuter town, which has seen great changes since its creation as a Norman settlement on a ridge of the North Downs.

Now referred to as Caterham-On-The-Hill, this area retains the Norman Church of St Lawrence and showcases more historical architecture than the more modern area of Caterham it overlooks, known as Caterham Valley.

The more contemporary and largely Victorian, Caterham Valley was established and developed after the arrival of the railway line at Caterham Station in 1856, which, combined with the construction of the Caterham Asylum in 1870, increased employment and prosperity allowing both areas of the town to grow into the now thriving Caterham.

With an abundance of excellent Schools, such as Caterham School and St Francis, to name only a few, and the commute to London taking under 50 minutes, Caterham is an ever-popular town offering something for everyone.
